Columbia County, PA—A single-engine plane went down in a heavily wooded area of Jackson Township Sunday night, Jan. 2, 2010, leaving the pilot and sole occupant of the aircraft with a fractured leg and contusions. According to information provided by the Times Leader, FAA spokesman Jim Peters said the injurious plane crash occurred as the plane was flying from Lancaster to Wikes-Barre/Scranton.

Reports indicated a Pennsylvania State Police trooper had to hike approximately 1.5 miles through a densely wooded area so he could reach the fiery crash site. A Geisinger Life Flight medical helicopter flew above the scene and acted as a guide for the unidentified trooper.

Upon arriving at the scene, the trooper began tending to pilot James Caswell, 22, as emergency personnel made their way to the crash site on ATVs and four-wheel-drive vehicles. The plane reportedly crashed just after 7 p.m.

Caswell was apparently the only person aboard the Piper fixed-wing plane, which was registered to FBO Air WB Leasing Inc.

Caswell suffered a broken leg and bruises in the Pennsylvania plane crash. He was airlifted to Lehigh Valley Hospital, located near Allentown, to be treated for his injuries.

Crews from Columbia and Sullivan counties participated in rescue efforts. The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are expected to conduct a full investigation into the Jackson Twp. aviation accident.
