Rusk County, WI—The Wisconsin State Patrol (WSP) is investigating a highway-rail grade crossing collision that sent an elderly motorist to the hospital Monday evening, Jan. 17, 2011. According to information provided by WEAU.com, a Canadian National train slammed into a sport utility vehicle on State Highway 27 at the railroad tracks near Ladysmith.

Reports indicated Ramona Lincoln, a 73-year-old Bruce resident, was driving her sport utility vehicle south on State Highway 27 when the railroad crossing arms and lights were activated to warn motorists and pedestrians of an oncoming train.

For unknown reasons, Lincoln stopped her SUV before the back portion of the vehicle cleared the tracks. The Canadian National train subsequently slammed into the back of Lincoln’s SUV, leaving it significantly damaged. The locomotive only sustained minor damage.

Lincoln, who was the only person in the wrecked SUV, was transported to Ladysmith-based Rusk County Memorial Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. She has since been released.

According to the Association of American Railroads (AAR), the number of highway-rail grade crossing collisions decreased 78 percent from 1980 to 2008. Also, injuries sustained in these accidents fell 76 percent and fatalities dropped 66 percent.

Wisconsin State Patrol troopers are investigating the Rusk County train-automobile collision.
